Design & development tools for the iPod Touch, that provide teachers with a convenient and innovative method to evaluate and track student reading fluency.

The Challenge

SRA requested the development of a handheld assessment tool that could be used with existing products: Direct Instruction-Reading Mastery and Corrective Reading. Two separate interfaces were necessary for the success of the product; the first being an online program for teachers to set-up and manage classes, administer assessments, and view numerous student or class performance reports. The second interface, for the iPod Touch, would allow teachers to conduct reading assessments without the need to shuffle papers or enter in tracking data. The final challenge lay in constructing one assessment template, to be used with over 360 different lessons across six grade levels. Coupled with this, tracermedia needed to provide dynamically generated student specific vocabulary flash cards based on lesson assessment results.

The Solution

Using the Mobile Safari browser for the iPhone and iPod Touch, tracermedia was able to create a convenient handheld interface that teachers could use during student reading assessments to track common mistakes and time performance. Data from these quick assessments, were then transferred to a mySQL database where teachers could view data using the DI-Reading Mastery online tools. Through this administrative desktop tool, teachers could manage their class groups and individual students and create specific reports and vocabulary flash cards at the class or individual level. The reports and practice flash cards can then be shared with students, parents and other faculty.

The Result

Once a tedious, paper-based method, eFluency ushers in an interactive, real-time online and hand-held reading assessment. Online tools are used to create reports and graphs automatically, instead of forcing teachers to take their paper-laden data and transform it into spreadsheets and bothersome charts. Another partnership between tracermedia and SRA that has helped to make a teacher’s day a little bit easier.
